Purple mineral on white matrix - amethyst or something else?

Picked this up from the creek behind my house. The color shifts from pale lavender at the base to deep purple at the tips. Hardness seems around 7 (scratches glass). The dealer said amethyst but the habit looks unusual to me. Is there anything else with this color range I should rule out?
