My 2024 iron meteorite finds — Campo del Cielo expedition recap

Just back from two weeks in the Chaco Province of Argentina hunting the Campo del Cielo strewn field. This is one of the most productive iron meteorite fields in the world — the fall occurred approximately 4,000–5,000 years ago and covered a massive area. This year I focused on deeper search with a GPX 6000. Recovered 14 individuals ranging from 180g to just over 3kg. The characteristic hexahedrite structure means they often look like rusted angular lumps, but the weight-to-volume ratio gives them away immediately. Highlight of the trip: a 2.8kg complete individual with an intact oriented crust showing regmaglypts (thumbprint-like impressions from atmospheric ablation). Spectacular piece.
