Essential tools for getting started in rockhounding

You do not need a full lapidary shop to start rockhounding. A basic field kit covers most situations. A rock hammer or geology pick handles breaking and trimming, and a cold chisel helps split along natural seams without wasting swings. Safety glasses are not optional, chips fly at odd angles and eye injuries from rock hammering are a real and common risk. Bring gloves, a couple of 5 gallon buckets or a sturdy pack for hauling material out, and a hand lens or loupe (10x is the standard magnification most collectors use) for checking crystal habit and inclusions in the field. A basic streak plate (an unglazed porcelain tile) and a cheap hardness pick set let you narrow down an unknown mineral before you even get home. Sturdy boots, sun protection, and plenty of water matter more than people expect, especially in desert terrain. A notebook or phone app to log where and when you found something is worth the habit, you will not remember details a year later that seemed obvious at the time.
