Appalachian and eastern forested terrain: an older, different kind of geology

The Appalachian region represents much older, more heavily weathered and eroded mountain building compared to the geologically younger American West, and the collecting character reflects that. This terrain is well known for garnet in schist and other metamorphic rock, quartz crystals in veins, and historically important mineral localities tied to old mining activity for materials like mica and various metal ores. Heavy vegetation cover generally means collecting tends to concentrate around road cuts, stream beds, and any exposed rock rather than open ground searching the way it might work in a sparse desert environment, simply because so much of the bedrock is covered by soil and forest.
