Pacific volcanic terrain: young rock and the material it produces

Volcanic terrain along the Pacific coast and interior Northwest tends to be geologically young by comparison to much of the rest of the country, and it is classically associated with agate found on beaches and in river gravels, obsidian from more recent volcanic flows, and the same general thunderegg and geode forming conditions found in other rhyolite rich volcanic regions. Coastal collecting in particular benefits from wave action, which does a lot of the sorting work naturally, concentrating durable material like agate on beaches while breaking down and washing away softer rock.
