Personal use collecting allowances on public land, where they exist, generally come with real quantity limits meant to keep casual hobby collecting from turning into unpermitted commercial extraction, and these limits genuinely vary by land management unit and even by specific material type within the same unit. Petrified wood in particular often has its own separate, stricter limit compared to general rock and mineral collecting on the same land. Exceeding posted limits, or collecting for resale under a personal use allowance meant for hobby collecting, are real, enforceable violations, not just guidelines, so checking current limits for the specific agency and unit before a trip is worth the few minutes it takes.
