Why your tumbled stones came out hazy instead of shiny

A hazy, dull finish after a full tumbling cycle almost always traces back to one of a few real, identifiable causes. The most common is grit contamination, a few leftover coarse grains carried into the polish stage from an incompletely cleaned barrel will scratch every stone in that batch just enough to prevent a true shine, even though the damage may not be obvious until the final stage. Another common cause is simply not running the polish stage long enough, some material genuinely needs a longer polish cycle than the standard 5 to 7 days to take a full shine. Hard water can also interfere with certain polishes forming a proper slurry. When a batch comes out hazy, the fix is almost always to thoroughly clean everything and run an additional, full length polish stage rather than assuming the stones themselves are the problem.
