Crevicing: cleaning gold out of exposed bedrock cracks
Jul 12, 2026 · 8 views
Once flowing water or prior excavation has exposed bedrock and cleared away the overlying gravel, cracks and depressions in that bedrock are genuinely one of the best places gold accumulates, since gold works its way down through loose gravel over time until it reaches something solid it cannot sink through any further. Crevicing tools, small picks, hooks, and narrow scrapers designed to reach into tight cracks, are used to clean this trapped material out for panning. This technique tends to reward patience and thoroughness over speed, a crack that looks empty at first glance can still hold material once properly dug out to its full depth.
