Labeling and cataloging your collection properly

A specimen without real locality and date information genuinely loses much of its long term value, both scientifically and to future collectors, no matter how attractive it looks. Good practice is to record where a specimen was found (as specifically as you reasonably can, and responsibly, without publishing sensitive location details publicly), the date, and how it was acquired, whether self collected, traded, or purchased, ideally at the moment you get the piece rather than relying on memory later. Many experienced collectors number specimens and keep a corresponding written or digital log rather than writing directly on the specimen itself, which keeps the physical piece clean while still preserving the full history.
