Choosing a rock hammer for the job you actually need it for

Not every rock hammer is built for the same task, and using the wrong one is both inefficient and a real safety risk. A dedicated geology pick, with a pointed tip on one end, is built for splitting along seams and prying, while a mason's or brick hammer with a flatter chisel edge is better suited to breaking rock along a controlled line. Heavier hammers deliver more force per swing but are harder to control precisely and more tiring over a full day in the field, which is why most experienced collectors carry a mid weight hammer for general use and add a heavier sledge only for specific, planned tasks like breaking apart a large boulder. Whatever the weight, a hammer genuinely designed for striking rock, not a standard construction hammer or hardware store claw hammer, is important, since ordinary hammers can chip or shatter when used against hard rock repeatedly.
