GPS and mapping apps: logging finds responsibly

Jul 12, 2026 · 7 views
A GPS enabled phone app is a genuinely useful, low cost way to log exactly where you found something, which matters both for your own records and for any future scientific or identification value the specimen might have. That said, sharing precise coordinates publicly for a productive site is a real, well known way to see that site stripped or overrun quickly, and many experienced collectors and clubs deliberately keep exact locations private or only share general regional information publicly, reserving precise data for personal records or trusted collecting partners. Recording it for yourself is good practice, broadcasting it widely is a separate decision worth thinking through.

Gem show prices have been wild since 2021. No sign of it changing.

The label and provenance point is so important and most new collectors skip it.
